The Right Dog for the Job

Bloomsbury/Walker, 2004

When photographer Bill Muñoz and I decided to follow a golden retriever from puppyhood to service dog, we didn’t know if we’d even get a magazine article from our work, much less a book that would end up including information about both service dogs and guide dogs for the blind. Over a period of 2 years, we followed Irah as he learned the tasks necessary for a service dog, then ended up being transferred to Guide Dogs for the Blind to learn how to be a guide dog instead. We loved every minute of our “work”—spending time with Irah and his littermates Ike and Ivy and their puppy raisers, learning about training techniques, and watching these intelligent dogs grow up and thrive.
